About American Forest Management

American Forest Management, Inc. (AFM) is the largest forest consulting and real estate brokerage firm in the United States.

AFM currently manages over 5.1 million acres of privately owned timberland and has sold over $1.8 billion in real estate in 2,100+ transactions since 2005. With 260 employees operating from 49 offices located in 16 states, AFM’s team of professionals is focused on meeting client needs by providing a complete range of forestry services. Our small regionally dispersed offices allow us to provide individualized services, and our large overall size allows us to coordinate teams of foresters and technical specialists for large, complex jobs.

In 1966, Bartow S. Shaw, Jr. formed Bartow Shaw and Associates to provide consulting services for non-industrial private forestland owners. The company gradually added foresters and forest technicians to meet an expanding client base. In 1983 and 1984, Frank McLeod III and Roy Belser became stockholders in Shaw, McLeod and Belser. In 1987, Shaw, McLeod and Belser acquired the Hurlbutt firm located in Walterboro, South Carolina becoming Shaw, McLeod, Belser and Hurlbutt, Inc. (SMBH). In 2002, SMBH acquired Canal Forest Resources, a consulting firm focusing primarily on land and data management for Timberland Investment Management Organizations. In January 2003, SMBH merged with Canal Forest Resources to form American Forest Management, Inc. (AFM). In 2007, AFM acquired Sustainable Forest Technologies, the consulting arm of International Paper. In 2012, AFM acquired International Forestry Consultants (INFO) to expand its operations into the Pacific Northwest.
